Morse Coffin came to St. Vrain Valley (Colorado) from Boon's County, Illinois in 1859 at the age of 22. Homesteaded the Sandstone Ranch in 1860. Fought in the Sand Creek Massacre. Married Julia Dunbar in 1865 and had five children. Wrote the book, The Battle of Sand Creek which wasn't published until 50 years after his death. Morse H. Coffin was born in Roxbury, N.Y., September 20, 1836. At the age of 21 he was began managing his father's farm in Illinois, but in 1859 he crossed the plains with two friends and arrived in Boulder on July 18th. He first whip-sawed lumber for Low, Goss & Pell, providing the lumber for the first frame house built in Boulder County (built by H.C. Norton).
